Lava Pond In Halemaumau Crater

The summit eruption of Kilauea Volcano, within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, has been putting on an incredible show. Lava explodes out of spatter cones within Haleama'uam'u crater. A lake of lava spills onto the crater floor, fed by a stream of lava. Halemaʻumaʻu is located in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on The Big Island of Hawaii.
Using my Sony A7RIV with a Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS and a 1.4x extender, I photographed this image. The total focal length was in the neighborhood of 780mm. The difficulty of photographing this image ranged from wind gusts to thermal distortion from the lava and thick clouds of emissions which often block the visibility of the lava. I shot hundreds of photos and was lucky to return with a photo I was happy with.
