Halema'uma'u fiery glow was the main attraction at Volcano National Park and was greatly missed since its deflation in 2018. The lava in the caldera suddenly drained leading to a major eruption among the lower east rift zone on the Big Island of Hawaii. On December 21, 2020, Pele's glow once emerged inside Halema'uma'u bringing great excitement and a new chapter in the history of the Kilauea Volcano.
In this photograph, I captured the the glow illuminating the plume rising out of Halema’uma’u just after sunset. An older crack in the dried lava leads the way to the active eruption. The details of the eruption are currently developing as of today January 12, 2021.
